The Lion Tour is an interactive and educational tour. By teaching people about lions and their natural behavior we are able to create a greater awareness of the importance of their conservation. Very few people are aware of the dire situation the lion population in Africa is facing and few realise that lions may become extinct in the near future. We take out small groups of people so that everyone can interact with the young (up to one year old) lions without stressing them in any way.

The tour is really laid back. Guests spend time in the garden feeding the baby lion cubs and any other rehab animals we might have at the time. Our guides are very knowledgeable and are always keen to share generally unknown and interesting facts about lions.

The once-in-a-life-time walk on the wild side is a highlight of the tour. These walks are very important for adolescent lions as it encourages them to explore their surroundings and to hone their hunting skills - essential for their successful release later in life. The lions love to stop for a cuddle or splash in the water. There are no leashes or restraints - the lions are free to play naturally and they love to show off, so don't forget your camera!

Only got one day ?

Do a Horse-riding Safari in the morning, lunch and Lion Tour in the afternoon.

Maximum 10 pax.

The full-day experience starts with a delicious cup of filter coffee or a selection of different teas.

Every participant is then interviewed to get the rider onto the correct horse for their level of riding experience.

After this, your guide does a “pre-flight briefing” which is a short lecture on safety and basic natural horsemanship. The riders then walk up to the stables where they are fitted with hard helmets and chaps for safety.

The ride takes place on Horseback Africa’s own private game reserve, which has a large selection of wild animals including giraffe, zebras, blue wildebeest, ostriches, and many species of antelope. Each rider is encouraged towards improving their horse riding skills - irrespective of their level of experience. Beginners learn to do the sitting trot, rising trot and even their first canter. Advanced riders are encouraged to enjoy smaller jumps, sand banks and riding through water and if they have proven ability, even a flat-out gallop along safe strenches. You spend about 2 hours in the saddle.

On returning to the lodge, the riders then enjoy a wonderful wood-fired pizza lunch at the Wild Horse restaurant.

Your lion tour guide starts with a short safety and information briefing. Most people are not aware that the African Lion is in real danger of becoming extinct in the near future. This fact and the measures we are taking to reverse this trendis highlighted in this presentation. After that it's time to head out on the lion walk! The lions run free, scampering up trees, playing in the river, stalking and practicing their hunting skills on each other. The young lions see the guide as their dominant male figure, and the participants as other members of the pride. After the walk you return to feed the adult lions and to learn about their habitats and behavior. Finally you return to the lodge garden to interact with the little cubs or any other rehabilitation animal we may have at the time. This is highly informative and educational experience that you will never forget.

The tour ends between 4pm and 4:30pm.

All tours and activities are available from Tuesday to Sunday.
