Carriage Driving

According to our champion South African carriage driver, Rodney Foster, this discipline is not just a colourful reminder of the past; it is a highly competitive sport demanding great concentration on the part of the driver and equally great agility and strength from the horses.

Just as with riding, there is a hard core of leisure drivers who just drive because they love it. It is certainly popular amongst those who have hung up their riding boots due to age or injury but, nevertheless, driving is most definitely not the exclusive domain of the middle-aged and older.

Carriage Driving

At the Horseback Africa lodge, a quite tranquil carriage drive is offered to in-house guests in the late afternoons. On the carriage, you can spend time understanding the harness, how to put a horse between the shafts and then go out for the drive, perhaps with the opportunity to even take the reins.

The game reserve has a special Parktrot track which is also used by the carriage drivers. The scenery is exquisite – going through wooded lanes and past stunningly beautiful dams.
