“Amazing!!! You HAVE to go there!!”
30th November, 2015

Me and my boyfriend went there to join the horse- safari. It was great, we saw a lots of animals really close to us. You will never get that close to animals in a vehicle. Brandon and his family were very very nice hosts. Even though my boyfriend had never riden a horse before, we both enjoyed it, because they planned the ride with the knowledge of our past experiences. Afterwards, we got a very delicious meal and were asked, if we would like to join the Lions walk. Actually, that was the best activity I did in my whole 3 weeks south Africa trip. We got a very interesting introduction of how to behave when we walk with the lions and how the farm treats their lions. Its nice to see how they work with them and how the lions love their guides. We always felt save and it was overall a day to remember!!

I definetely recommend the place to everybody!! You will never regret it!

“Outstanding Experience”
24th September, 2015

Horseback Africa is one of the most amazing places we have stayed. From the warm welcome to the enthusiasm and friendliness of this family run business we couldn't have wish for more.

Our arrival plans changed a number of times but this didn't seem to phase Shannon how organised our 2 night stay. She even answered my text messages on her day off.

Security at the main entrance was quietly waiting for us and escorted us past the Lion enclosures to the farm. Colin, the owner, had a meal ready for us and he sat and ate with us, patiently answering our never ending questions about the farm and how it all started, the riding and the Lions. He put us all immediately at ease and after a cleansing beer we retired for the night. What I wasn't expecting was the Lions to start roaring as we walked up toward the accommodation. Very exciting in the pitch black of an African night.

The rooms were just as I had imagined. Immaculately clean, very comfortable with water and fresh towels laid out.

The next morning after a hearty breakfast we were joined by other visitors and given a full briefing about the riding. The horses were calm, well trained and you could do as much or as little as you felt comfortable with. To experience and see the wildlife up close is amazing.

That same afternoon, Matt, talked with enthusiasm about his work with the lions before setting out to meet and walk with 4 eleven month old Lions. The adrenaline rush of seeing lions come out of their enclosure towards us is something I find hard to put into words. But with Matt and his staff imposing discipline we all felt very safe.

Although my children were too young (12 and 8) to walk with the lions, they both met 6 six month old lions and helped bottle feed 2 four week old cubs. Incredible!

You can take your own riding gear but you don't need to. As for the lions..... even Matt doesn't have a whip and chair.

Overall, as a 2 day adventure this is outstanding. I can not recommend it highly enough. My thanks to all at Horseback Africa.

“Great day out! ”

Pricey for locals but the cash buys a great experience. Much better riding experience than at other local outfits and includes the use of pool (when weather allows) and bar facilities and a light lunch (wood fired pizza). Conservation efforts (they breed lions) are impressive as are close-up encounters with giraffes, antelope and zebra. Beginners are trained in basic horsemanship and end up with a lot of confidence. Impressed to see A group of Lufthansa cabin crew there on one of their numerous return visits.

A fantastic afternoon we will truly and honestly remember. Having come from Canada, we were looking for a truly original experience and we found it at Horseback Africa. From the reception of the entire family, to the knowledge and dedication of lion caretaker Matt, the welcome we received on arrival was fantastic - and we had yet to even begin our afternoon walk. The experience of walking with lions is something we have since shared, both through stories and photos, with anyone and everyone who will listen. The dedication and commitment to the cause shown by all involved at Horseback Africa is what makes the experience more than the time we spent with the lions that afternoon - it's knowing the current crop of lions, as well as those to come, are all in good hands. If you have the chance, follow our advice (as well as that from those of our friends who are soon headed there!) and make the drive north of Pretoria and see this amazing place and those who help make it special.

A ‘LIFE TIME EXPERIENCE’
18th August, 2015

In December this year my husband and I stayed for 2 nights and had the most amazing experience. The owners Colin and Theony MacRae are a genuinely friendly, informative couple, who very obviously love their animals immensely. We would 100% recommend this experience, you will never forget it. The close up and personal experience with the lions is unbelievable and has to be experienced at least once in a lifetime. The only this that would have made it better was if we could have had the whole family from the UK with us. We would like thank you all there, and say a special thank you to Matthew, you are a really fantastic person with such a big heart for the lions you work with, it was great to meet you. All our friends are amazed at the photos and stories of our experiences we shared with them. THANK YOU!

What a wonderfull place! Not much to add to the previous comments, but I have to mention the great massage i had after our horseriding trip. Hellen is an experienced masseuse who gives a fantastic full body (hot stone) massage for a reasonable price. She works in a nice room with open doors to the (private) garden (the african heat warming your body). Very relaxing experience, recommanded!

We visited with a Discovery Corp. group and it was truly amazing. I would highly recommend this stop to anyone traveling to S. Africa. Go out of your way if you have to- it is worth it.

"Fantastic"

An amazing experience! It is like a dream coming true when you get the chance to get so close to lion cubs ! The tour is part of a serious and well explained conservation project. Very welcoming staff. I had a wonderful moment and recommend without a doubt !

A Memorable Experience
8th March, 2017

I just recently returned back home to Australia after an amazing trip to Johannesburg. The high light of my trip was visiting Colin's Horseback Africa.

I would like to give special thanks to yourself, Shannon, Matt, Brandon and Colin on making my visit there a special one.

From the moment my group arrived you made us feel welcome. I was so impressed with your genuine care for each visitor and your passion of conservation.

I was nervous to get back on a horse after being thrown from one last year. Your safety briefing at the start alone before we even got on a horse impressed me so much. I have never seen this before on any day trip I have had at any other horse school I have previously attended. Throughout the ride Colin himself as well as co leaders stayed close to me and continually checked I was OK until the point I was so relaxed to be back on a horse I comfortably did a rising trot again. This time last year I thought I would never get back on. So I thank you just for this.

The walking with lions tour was an even bigger highlight. Matt was unbelievably informative and even though he mentioned he was feeling unwell at the start of the tour he gave us what still felt 100%. We were all jet lagged from our flight from Australia but I can't believe how much information I retained due to his great delivery of information of your conservation program.

On a deeper more personal level I would like to give a special thank you, as the day I came to visit was special occasion for me. It would have been my grandmothers 82nd birthday and my daughters 4th birthday. As you can imagine not being in the same country as my daughter was difficult in itself but I was in the birth place of my grandmother who sadly passed away. It couldn't have been a more perfect place to celebrate the occasion than being there. Helped by the generous complementary sherry at the end of the tour with my group to toast the occasion. I will never forget the compassion and the time allowed to me to share this moment to mark such a special occasion.

Since returning I have spoken highly to other colleagues about Colin's and passed your details on. Each saying this will be their next place they visit on their return trips to Johannesburg.

I myself will be back and will bring my family as this should be experienced by all.

Thank you for creating such a memorable experience. I look forward to seeing you all again in the future.
